On the afternoon of September 11, Wang Professor Maryellen Giger, Professor of Radiology / Medical Physics, Academician of American Academy of Engineering, Chairman of SPIE (Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers) and Editor of SPIE Journal of Medical Imaging were invited to visited Tianjin University School of Precision instrument &Opto-electronics engineering. Professor Giger is recognized as a pioneer in computer-aided diagnostics and has published over 300 research papers, received numerous research awards including the William D. Coolidge Award.Hailong, secretary of the party committee of Silencing Institute, met cordially with Professor Maryellen Giger in the VIP room of the conference room of Tianjin University. Our vice president Prof. Yang Bo, Professor Hu Xiaolong and Tianjin University International Cooperation and Exchange Office of the YuanBo escored. Wang first extended a warm welcome to Professor Maryellen Giger and her delegation. Subsequently, Wang introduced the teaching and research of Tianjin University School of Precision instrument &Opto-electronics engineering. Professor Giger introduced the basic situation of the SPIE. Finally, we reached a cooperation intention in the future about teaching and research in relevant fields.
At 2 p.m, Professor Giger made a wonderful report for all teachers and students entitled "Computer Vision and Machine Learning in Breast Cancer Diagnosis." In the report, Professor Giger first introduced the SPIE Optical Society briefly. Review the history of SPIE and SPIE sessions in the future, SPIE Data Library, the benefit for student member, Early Career Planning, SPIE Nonprofit Activities and Social Work Relationships. Subsequently, Professor Maryellen L.Giger reported the research she has done so far. The University of Chicago lab is dedicated to exploring new ways of using computers to extract rich information from medical images to help radiologists detect and diagnose diseases. In the Q & A session, Professor Giger answered the questions patiently. Her energetic introduction and enthusiasm for scientific research touched everyone and aroused more interest of students in participating in SPIE. The lecture ended in a pleasant atmosphere!
After the lecture, Professor Giger and her party visited the Ministry of Education, Key Laboratory of Optoelectronic Information, Tianjin University, including Ultrafast Laser Lab, Institute of Laser and photonics, optoelectronics and optical fiber sensing technology laboratory, nonlinear and quantum optical technology laboratory, Terahertz Research Center and Photonics Systems Laboratory.
Professor Maryellen L.Giger's visit will help enhance the popularity of our school related fields of optics and photonics research and promote the work of the SPIE student branch of Tianjin University. In the process of internationalization of our university and student chapters will also play a good promotional role.
